A must for Barolo & Barbaresco lovers.

Barbacan is a small artisan family winery based in San Giacomo de Teglio in Valtellina region, on the border of Switzerland in the Italian Alps.  Father Angelo Sega runs the winery with his sons Matteo & Luca.

They tend 7 hectares of vine plots at 400 - 750 metres altitude on impossibly steep slopes, which involves back-breaking work in the granitic soils with everything done by hand, trekking up and down the steep steps built into the mountainside.  They are one of the only Valtellina estates dedicated to traditional and artisanal methods.

The Segas practice organic viticulture - waiting for certification - and are one of the natural wine pioneers in Valtellina bottling unfined, unfiltered with modest SO2.

Valtellina is a narrow east-west valley north east of Milan.  Protected by Alpine ranges north and south of the valley, their south and southwest facing vineyards can get temperatures as hot as in Sicily.

"Valtellina is surely bound to become Italy's next cult wine region": Walter Speller on Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages.

The local Chiavennasca grape produces a very delicate lighter-bodied style of Nebbiolo with less tannin, but with beautiful aromas and a silky quality to the fruit.

As well as making wine and tending their vines, Matteo & Luca love to sing & dance in the vineyard too - check out their Instagram & Facebook pages.  So it looks set be a fun tasting!
