Harrow & Hope won the UK WINERY OF THE YEAR at the Wine GB Awards last year (2019).

This small family-owned, single vineyard estate produces some of the most interesting traditional method English sparkling wine - grown, picked and expertly blended by the same team on the same site.  Harrow & Hope was established by Henry Laithwaite, and his wife Kaye, after working in vineyards across Australia and France - latterly running Chateau Verniotte in Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux.

Henry was brought up in a family obsessed with wine, his father is leading retailer & wine estate owner Tony Laithwaite.

He says he made his first wine (with pineapple) aged 13.

He chose the site on the rolling hills behind Marlow in Buckinghamshire, attracted to the hard flint, chalk & gravel soils of Thames Gravel Terrace, an area previously neglected by other fizz pioneers.  The south-facing vineyard is about 6.4 hectares, sloped on all sides to assist drainage and reduce frost impact.  He grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

In his first seven years Henry was assisted by two very dynamic winemaking consultants.  The late Dr Tony Jordan, the world's most celebrated sparkling winemaker and a brilliant blending supremo, who worked for Moet & Chandon setting up Green Point in Australia and other operations in India - and the English fizz pioneer the late Mike Roberts of Ridgeview.

They both helped mould Henry's style - which is richer, more textural and savoury in comparison to more floral English fizz.  Harrow & Hope currently makes four sparkling wines from his fully organic vineyards - and we will taste three of them.

"I am astounded by the quality Henry has achieved from such young vines.  The future of Harrow & Hope looks bright": Dr Tony Jordan
