BULGARIA'S NATIVE GRAPES
FRIDAY 30 APRIL 2021 6.30PM
in assocation with The Old Cellar
Guest Host: Dr Caroline Gilby MW
Discover beautiful Bulgaria with two Masters of Wine!
This fun online tasting session will focus on the exciting wines now emerging from Bulgaria - with a discussion on its native grapes.
Our guest host will be Dr Caroline Gilby MW, who is the UK's leading expert on Eastern European wines with 30 years of experience working with Bulgaria. She has recently written an excellent book on the subject: 'The Wines of Bulgaria, Romania & Moldova' (Classic Wine Library) and will be sharing anecdotes and stories about Bulgaria's wine history, grapes and winemakers.
For this tasting, we have chosen a specially discounted 4 bts pack of wines (£56.75) from Bulgarian specialist winemerchants, The Old Cellar - which includes two whites and two reds with a focus on indigenous grape varieties: Red Misket, Tamianka, Rubin & Mavrud.
"Bulgaria has come a long way from its days as a supplier of bulk Cabernet Sauvignon in the mid 1980s", says Dr Gilby.
There has been a dynamic rise in the quality of wines in Bulgaria - with new wineries, new styles and the revival of indigenous grapes from its current 30,000 hectares.
Interestingly Bulgaria also has a significantly higher percentage of women winemakers compared to other countries - and several of the wines in our tasting are either made by women or from wineries are owned by women - so they are very much part of the new modern Bulgarian wine scene. If you would like to read more on this subject click here.
Please purchase your tasting ticket (£20) on our website below (or contact Rose to pay by bacs) - and then follow the link below to purchase the tasting pack (£56.75) direct from The Old Cellar. There are a limited number of tasting packs available, so it is important you purchase the tasting case now.
The wines can be delivered anywhere on the UK mainland - and delivery is included in the price (small additional charge for Scottish Highlands & Islands).
This would make a fun educational gift for yourself, friends, family, colleagues or clients.
Once you have signed up to join the tasting, Rose will email you the tasting mat and tasting sheet to print off for each session - with simple instructions on how to prepare the wines with cheese matching suggestions (optional).
The aim is to have fun whilst learning about wine, in the safety of your own home.
PLEASE NOTE: You only need to buy one tasting ticket per household (£20 total) - you can invite as many people as you like to join you - but please all share the same screen.

Rose Valley: AXL ROSE VALLEY MISKET LIMITED EDITION 2019 Chateau Copsa
100% Misket – an indigenous Bulgarian white grape variety, the clone for AXL is Karlovo or Rose Valley Misket – which is only grown in the small region of Rose Valley in Central Bulgaria. This is made by Madlena Kuzmanova from grapes grown in a single vineyard.
Sakar Mountain: TAMIANKA WILD FERMENTED SHISHMANOVO VINEYARD 2019 Bratanov Family Winery
The best example of Tamianka grape made in Bulgaria – a local selection of Muscat grown for centuries in Bulgaria and some other Balkan countries. South Sakar is one of the sunniest regions in Bulgaria and really suits the grape. This is made from Bratanov’s Shishmanovo single vineyard – crafted by winemaker Maria Stoeva using the winery’s signature wild yeast fermentation.
Danube Plain: H’s RUBIN 2019 Haralambievi Family Vineyards
A very popular modern style of Rubin made by the recently established Haralambievi family winery, who make a range of high quality boutique wines in the Danube Plain region. Rubin is a cross between two European grapes: Nebbiolo and Syrah.
Thracian Valley: MERUL MAVRUD RESERVE 2017 Rumelia Winery
Mavrud is an ancient Bulgarian grape variety which is made in a variety of styles, in this case a powerful oaked style. Mavrud is a particular passion for the Rumelia family winery which is now run by the founder’s daughter Tsveta Kostova, near Panagyurishte. Their Merul Reserve was recently voted as one of the top 50 best wines in DiVino magazine.
