Top twelve sherries to celebrate the forthcoming Sherry Week 2021 from Monday 8 - Sunday 14 November:

MANZANILLA

ALEGRIA MANZANILLA SUPERIOR Williams & Humbert (15%)  ***GOOD VALUE***
£8.75 for 75cl bt The Wine Society
Bready yeasty aromas entice you into this deliciously tangy saline-tinged bone-dry aperitif with its green olive, orange peel, silky texture and almond notes – this Manzanilla was aged for more than 6 years - such good value.

Bota 93 Manzanilla Equipo NavazosLA BOTA 93 MANZANILLA ‘NAVAZOS’ Equipo Navazos (15%)
£26.96 for 75cl bt Drinkmonger, Edinburgh; £32 Virgin Wines
Equipo Navazos release exciting ‘botas’ from dozens of casks looked after by oenologist Eduardo Ojeda.  93 is their nineth Manzanilla release – it was aged about 7 years in Barrio Alto in Sanlucar, a higher area of the town which creates Manzanillas with great finesse.  Loved its salty, minerally freshness and powerful tangy palate.

MANZANILLA ORIGEN EN RAMA Bodegas Callejuela (15%)
£16 for hf bt Drinkmonger, Edinburgh
Herby briny earthy notes, citric fruit core and swirls of sea breeze freshness and piquancy.  Artisan Sanlucar bodegas Callejuela is run by Pepe and Paco Martinez and winemaker Ramiro Ibanez.  En Rama is ‘straight from the cask’ with no filtration.

FINO

INOCENTE FINO NV Bodegas Valdespino (15%)
£8.95 for hf bt The Wine Society; £10.99 for hf bt Oxford Wine; £16.50 for 75 cl bt Lea & Sandeman: £17.95 for 75 cl bt Harris & Co, Castle Douglas
Full rich Fino from a single vineyard in Macharnudo district.  One of the few left which is barrel fermented with wild yeasts in 600 litre American oak butts, made by one of the oldest bodegas in Jerez.  Toasty, vanilla, quite herbal, nutty – but still refreshing.

TRES PALMAS 2014 Gonzalez Byass (16%)
£39 for 50 cl bt Whisky Exchange; Lay & Wheeler
This rare old Fino is a 10 year old version of Tio Pepe from a single cask selected for its thin veil of flor.  Additional ageing has given it deep colour, nutty aromas and a chalky minerality, but like all good Fino it is intense and dry.

AMONTILLADO

Amontillado VORS 30 year old Bodegas Tradicion
£63 for 75cl bt Justerini & Brooks
Brilliant mature Amontillado from the impressive Bodegas Tradicion – a young bodegas with an impressive reputation for quality.  Loved its citric fruit, roasted nuts, cinnamon, tobacco, meaty with a salty edge and layers of flavour; like all true Amontillado this is bone dry.

PALO CORTADO

PEDRO’S ALMACENISTA SELECTION PALO CORTADO Cayetano del Pino (20%)
£15.99 / £17.99 for 75cl bt Majestic Wine
Good value introduction to this lesser-known style, made by Palo Cortado specialist Cayetano del Pino.  Sourced by Pedro (aka wine buyer Peter Dauthieu) - expect light nutty notes, tangy palate with a bitter almond finish – more in the Amontillado mould.

PALO CORTADO ‘CLASICO’ Bodegas Urium (19%)
£29 for 50 cl bt & £34 for 75 cl bt Luvians
Palo Cortado is my favourite style from Urium, a fantastic small bodegas run by charming Rocio Ruiz.  I prefer Urium’s VORS 30 year old, but it is sold out in the UK.  Try instead their elegant toffee citric Palo Cortado Clasico aged 15-20 years in solera casks - more intense than Amontillado, heading towards the nutty richness of Oloroso.

Antique Oloroso Fernando de CastillaDRY OLOROSO

ANTIQUE OLOROSO Bodegas Fernando de Castilla (20%)
£26.96 for 50cl bt  Drinkmonger, Edinburgh; Woodwinters; Whisky Exchange
Affordable introduction to unfiltered unblended untreated mature dry Oloroso which has spent no time under flor, but was fortified after harvest to over 18%.  Loved the rich nutty fruitcake notes, firm structure, glycerol texture of this 20 year old.  Made by Norwegian sherry-professional Jan Peterson – serve with roasted almonds, chocolates, dried smoked beef or even duck.

SWEET OLOROSO

EAST INDIA SOLERA Bodegas Lustau (20%)
£11.99 hf bt Waitrose; £15.95 for 50 cl bt Whisky Exchange; Luvians
Very good sweetened Oloroso; basically 80% dry Oloroso blended with 20% sweet PX - aged separately in solera for 12 years, then blended together for three years.  At 130 grams per litre of residual sugar expect something similar in sweetness to a Sauternes dessert wine.  Beautifully balanced lusciously rich cream style sherry.

PEDRO XIMENEZ

IRRESISTIBLE PX SHERRY Bodegas Lustau (17%) ***STAR BUY***
£6 hf bt Co-op
Co-op have excelled themselves with this little gem.  Deep dark colour, figgy raisiny and treacley delight made from sundried grapes.  What a bargain for an eight year old Pedro Ximenez made by highly respected Lustau.

CARDENAL CISNEROS RESERVAS ESPECIALES 20 YR OLD PX Bodegas Sanchez Romate (18%)
£27.50-£30 for 75cl bt The Whisky Exchange; Master of Malt
Grapes are dried on esparto grass mats for up to 21 days which enhances its sugar richness – then ageing for about 20 years in cask has mellowed and intensified its flavours.  Hints of coffee, chocolate and succulent raisins with a succulent soft mouthfeel.  Sweet heaven.

Edinburgh Cinema Club will be hosting a sherry tasting & screening of ‘Mystery of Palo Cortado’ film on Monday 8 November 6pm: £15
