A dozen crisp whites to enjoy on warm summer days this month.

Campania, Italy: THE SOCIETY’S FALANGHINA DEL SANNIO 2021 La Guardiense (13.5%) ***STAR VALUE***
£8.95 The Wine Society
Great price for Campania, the home of southern Italy’s best whites.  This unoaked Falanghina makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.  Grown in the large Sannio DOC in the hills inland from Naples, it is a brilliant allrounder with tangy quince and tangerine aromas, zippy limey acidity and textured nutty palate.

Amyndeon, Greece: ASSYRTIKO 2021 Filos Estate (13%)
£6.99 Aldi
For the price this is an interesting introduction to Assyrtiko grape.  I have had plenty of better Assyrtikos from Santorini island, but not at this cracking price.  This comes from high altitude 625m vineyards in Amyndeon in north west Greece – grassy herby, sweet sour notes with a clean dry finish.

Kent, England: LIBERTY’S BACCHUS 2021 Hush Heath (11.5%)
£25 Balfour Winery; Grape Britannia; Matthew Clark
Named after Hush Heath’s vineyard dog, this comes from the estate’s highest grown vines in Foxridge vineyard.  Starts with an elderflower blossomy nose, carries through with intense citric flavours and mouthwatering acidity – an impressive take on the local Bacchus grape.

Morrisons the best Gruner VeltlinerNiederosterreich, Austria: MORRISONS THE BEST GRUNER VELTLINER 2020 Markus Huber (12.5%)  ***STAR VALUE***
£8.50 Morrisons
Winemaker Markus Huber is a superstar at creating inexpensive unoaked Gruner Veltliner from his vineyards south of Vienna and the Danube.  Typical of the grape, it has herby, floral blossomy nose with crisp zesty lemony palate with a hint of pepper.

Loire, France: SAUVIGNON DE TOURAINE LES GRENETTES 2021 Domaine Beausejour
£9.98 Justerini & Brooks
If you normally drink Kiwi Sauvignon, try this fresh zingy Sauvignon from Loire’s Touraine.  It has taut acidity and grapefruit flavours that work so well as a crisp summer quaffer – and it cleverly combines ripe fruit with flinty notes and zingy lemon ideal with goats cheese salad.

Getaria, N Spain: TXAKOLI 2020 Bodega Agerre (11.5%)
£14.50-£15 Aitken Wines, Dundee; Cornelius Wine, Edinburgh; Lockett Bros, N Berwick; Provender Brown, Perth; Fine Wine Musselburgh
The Spanish Basque country’s unique Txakoli, made from Hondarrabi Zuri grape grown in Gipuzkoa close to northern Spain’s Atlantic coast between Bilbao and San Sebastian.  Brilliantly clean, crisp lime and green apple flavours with a touch of spritz – refreshingly light in alcohol at 11.5%.

Rueda, Spain: VINA GAREDO 2020 Grupo Yllera (13%)
£9.95 Corney & Barrow
On a high plateau in Castilla y Leon north of Madrid, Rueda is Spain’s biggest selling white wine region.  Here local Verdejo grape thrives on chalk-rich soils.  Stone fruit and citrus aromas, herby notes and creamy leesy length – with a dash of Sauvignon Blanc to freshen and add vibrant acidity.

£5.99 Aldi
Another cracking price from Aldi, suit those who don’t like their Sauvignon Blanc too dry.  Floral peachy aromas with crunchy green apple fruit flavours – easy drinking example from one of Chile’s premium white wine area, Casablanca Valley.

Istria, Croatia: MALVAZIA ISTARSKA ‘ALBA’ 2021 Matosevic (12.5%)  ***STAR BUY***
£18.99 Ellies Cellar, Dollar; Fine Wine Musselburgh; Hennings Wine
Istria in northern Croatia was once part of Italy, its crisp unoaked lees-aged whites are similar to those you find over the border in Friuli’s Collio and in Slovenia.  Malvazia Istarska is Istria’s local grape making floral rich textured whites with lime and nectarine aromas, intense herby undertones, vibrant acidity and creamy apricot flavours.

Mendoza, Argentina: TORRONTES SELECCION 2021 (12.5%)
£8.99 mix six or £9.99 bt Majestic Wine
Aromatic unoaked Torrontes from the foothills of the Andes, grown at 950m in Valle de Uco in Mendoza.  Winemaker Herve J Fabre crafts Argentina’s signature white into a beautifully floral perfumed white packed with pure citric and tropical fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a crisp vibrant finish.

Languedoc, France: IRRESISTIBLE MARSANNE 2020 Jean-Claude Mas (13%)  ***STAR VALUE***
£8 Co-op
Brilliant value white made from northern Rhone’s Marsanne grape grown in the warm south near Herault.  Honeysuckle and pearskin aromas, light creamy quaffing aperitif white from one of Languedoc’s most respected producers, Jean-Claude Mas.  Suit those who normally buy Pays d’Oc Chardonnay or Viognier.

Rias Baixas, Spain: ALBARINO 2021 Mar de Frades
£16 Tesco
From a cool vintage in the untamed Atlantic climate, this regional blend from 50% Mar de Frades estate grapes with the remainder bought in from growers in Salnes Valley.  Delicate lime and apricot aromas, zippy zesty appley melon flavours with mouthwatering acidity, lemon zest hints and distinctive saline notes like a fresh sea breeze across the palate.
