This is a cracking buy for £9.95.
Apples, apricots and ginger on the nose, an explosive mouthful of citric fruit and honey with a beautifully creamy texture and Furmint's characteristic shrill acidity - it's just crying out for grilled fish, pork chops, smoked fish or lobster. It tastes like a Chablis with more spice, body and a fiery finish. This rich dry wine is made from Tokaj's most famous grape variety, Furmint, by a small artisan winery Nobilis Estate in Tokaj region in North East Hungary - founded in 2000 by Sarolta Bardos.
Look out too for Nobilis' single vineyard wine made from Furmint (available from Novel Wines) - and their Harslevelu.
You can also find the Furmint grape in Austria, Croatia and Slovenia (known as Sipon) - and it could have potential in the New World.
